Tarzaban Podcast; Episode 11: Happy New Year
Welcome to the first English episode of Tarzaban. As you probably already know, Tarzaban means both eloquent and bilingual, and here we discuss anything related to the world of teaching and learning languages. As we’re so close to the new year, in this episode we’re going to discuss the new year culture and traditions in the US and the UK. I’m Amirhossein, and I’m talking to you from the online branch of Khanezaban. Stay tuned!
In many places, people have big parties. They drink, dance, and watch the fireworks. The New Year begins at midnight, so as we get closer to 12 o’clock at night, people get ready for the countdown. They usually start counting down seconds in the last ten seconds or so before midnight.
One special New Year tradition in the United States, in New York City, is the famous ball drop. Every year, a large and sparkly ball drops at midnight. It’s a very big event that many people watch around the world. It’s a fun way to mark the start of the New Year.
Now, before the New Year there are two other very important holidays you should know about: Christmas and Hanukkah. Christmas is a holiday celebrated in many countries. It’s usually a time to give gifts, have a special meal, and spend time with family. People often decorate Christmas trees and think about Santa Claus. Many cultures have their own special traditions for Christmas, combining them with the more international ones.
Another holiday that is sometimes celebrated around the same time as Christmas and New Year is Hanukkah. It’s a Jewish holiday, and people often light a special candle holder called a Menorah. They also give gifts, play games, and have special meals with their families. Again, many people mix this holiday with their own unique cultural celebrations.
After all this celebrating, people often think about New Year’s resolutions. We make resolutions because it is a new year, and we can think about things we want to change, improve or start. They can be about health, learning or other things. Sometimes people take them very seriously, and sometimes it’s just for fun!
